Poems Are Where I Tell the Truth: Being Honest with bridgette bianca

Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center 681 Venice Blvd, Venice Beach, Los Angeles, CA, United States

In this three-hour intensive workshop, we will say the things we never thought we would, no matter how silly or serious the subjectThere’s something about poetry that begs you to be honest. Unsure of yourself as an adult? Feeling like a badass? In a complicated relationship with food delivery services? Still have love for your ex? Haunted by those bangs you had in high school? Manifesting a life of abundance? Not sure how you feel about toppling the prison industrial complex? No matter how silly or serious the subject, join us for a workshop where we will say the things we never thought we’d say through poetry.Poems are where we tell the truth . . . sometimes. But the art of performance or awareness of the reader or just plain fear can sometimes dull the sharp edges of our honesty. We’ll look at poems from folks who are good at being honest about what hurts and heals them, what makes them smile fondly or wince dramatically, and what makes them lay awake at night in wonder. And then we will dig into our own truths and tuck some of them into poems. . . if only to be honest with Read More ...

Book Talk! Sascha Rothchild’s BLOOD SUGAR

Chevalier's Books 133 North Larchmont Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, United States

Join Sascha Rothchild to discuss her recent book BLOOD SUGARABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHORQUICK TAKE: A New York Times Book Review Best Thriller of 2022 that received critical acclaim from outlets like Cosmopolitan, New York Post, FIRST For Women, CrimeReads, Paste, PopSugar, and BookPage, BLOOD SUGAR tells the story of Ruby Simon, an absurdly likeable murderess accused of killing her husband—ironically, the only murder she didn’t commit. As Ruby undergoes questioning and the narrative alternates between Ruby’s memories of her past crimes and her present-day fight to clear her name, Rothchild weaves an intricately plotted and surprisingly sensitive exploration of love, guilt, chronic illness, revenge, and justice, all served up in her irreverent charm and fresh, acerbic prose. The result is a twisty, clever tale of female power and a surprising tribute to the extraordinary things we do for love, starring an unforgettable protagonist you can’t help but root for—an addicting mixture of sour and sweet.BLOOD SUGAR marks a departure for Rothchild, who cut her teeth writing some of the last decades’ boldest, most memorable stories. After gaining notoriety first for her 2004 stint on public radio show “This American Life” and then for her comedic yet heartfelt memoir-turned-screenplay, How Read More ...

2023 Zócalo Book Prize: How Does a Community Save Itself?

ASU California Center at the Herald Examiner 1111 South Broadway, Los Angeles, CA, United States

The 13th Annual Zócalo Book Prize Event. Register to join us in-person or live online.America’s high-poverty cities and counties have suffered for decades, enduring skyrocketing inequality, the opioid epidemic, rising housing costs, and widespread disinvestment. Governments have offered a variety of failed solutions, from luring wealthy outsiders to slashing public services. But four communities are turning inward instead: Stockton, California; rural Josephine County, Oregon; Lawrence, Massachusetts; and Detroit, Michigan. In these diverse places—all of which went broke in the wake of the Great Recession—locals are building networks and trust in one another and their institutions, to promote health, wealth, and opportunity. In Stockton, this meant designing organizations to help residents cope with trauma. In Josephine County, people convinced freedom-loving, government-averse voters to increase taxes. Lawrence is building a new model to secure living wages. Detroit is battling to stabilize low-income housing. What did these strategies look and feel like on the ground? How can other struggling places borrow from their playbooks? And what can the rest of the country do to support towns as they try to help themselves? Arthur Kayzakian’s Book of Redacted Paintings Book Launch!

Open Mind Art Space 11631 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, United States

Arthur Kayzakian's Book of Redacted Paintings is here! Please join Arthur (and special guests) for a night of reading and art! Please join Arthur for his first book launch, celebrating the release of The Book of Redacted Paintings (Black Lawrence Press, 2023)! There will be drinks, snacks, readings (featuring Arthur, Brendan Constantine and Cynthia Dewi Oka) and music, as well as, of course, book signing. In The Book of Redacted Paintings, the narrative arc follows a boy in search of his father’s painting, but it is unclear whether the painting exists or not. The book, a poetry collection, is also populated by a series of paintings. Some are real, incomplete, and/or missing, while most are redacted from reality. The withdrawn paintings concept is the emotional arc of the book, a combination of wishing one could paint the pieces he/she/they envision and the feeling of something torn out of a person due to a traumatic upbringing. A sort of erasure ekphrasis, to foresee artwork that was never painted. The first of Black Lawrence Press's Immigrant Writing Series, The Book of Redacted Paintings is "Formally various, narratively propulsive, and relentlessly earnest in its psychospiritual excavation" (Kaveh Akbar) and "...one of the best examples I’ve Read More ...
