About the Book:

Tanaïs (née Tanwi Nandini Islam) is a multidisciplinary artist, novelist, memoirist, and perfumer. They are the author of In Sensorium: Notes for My People, which won the Kirkus Prize in Nonfiction, and offers an alternative history of South Asia through the lens of scent. Their critically acclaimed queer coming-of-age debut novel, Bright Lines, was a finalist for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, the Edmund White Debut Fiction Award, and the Brooklyn Eagles Literary Prize. They studied at Vassar College and Brooklyn College, and founded the independent artisan perfume house Studio Tanaïs. Their writing and perfumes have been featured in Vogue, Vogue India, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, The Cut, The Nation, and more. They live in New York City with their husband, Mojo.

Chantal Aida Gordon is an award-winning writer and gardener. Her fiction has appeared in American Short Fiction and Vassar Review, and her journalism in T Magazine, Shondaland, Teen Vogue, and others. She’s the co-author of houseplant book How to Window Box, a guide to bringing nature into your home. Born in Brooklyn and raised in the suburbs of DC, she now lives in Northeast Los Angeles.

The Dark Woods Project: A Forest Horror Authors Collective

Authors Bitter Karella, Allison Mick, and Joshua Millican present their folk horror work focusing on environmental horror.

Join us for a reading and conversation from The Dark Woods Project!

The Dark Woods Project is a writers’ collective bound by explorations of Forest Horror (including Redwood Gothic and Eco-horror). The authors delve into the ominous complexities and primal fears of Forest Horror, specifically in the Pacific Northwest. While diverse in perspective and scope, Moonflow by Bitter Karella, Humboldt Cut by Allison Mick, and Dopefoot by Joshua Millican are united by their distinct geography and powerful themes.

Attendees can apply their purchase of a ticket towards a $10 credit for any featured book at the event.

About the participants:

Bitter Karella is a genderfluid transvestite goblin, best known as the creator of the three-time Hugo- nominated microfiction comedy account @Midnight_Pals which asks what if all your favorite horror writers were to gather around the campfire and tell scary stories like in the classic Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark? Karella writes gonzo psycho- sexual body horror with a grotesquely humorous edge. His short story “Low Tide Jenny,” originally published in Seize the Press magazine, was a winner of the Brave New Weird award for best new weird fiction of 2022 by Tenebrous Press.

Allison Mick is a Los Angeles-based comedy-horror writer, and the author of Humboldt Cut (Erewhon Books), an eco-gothic novel about a suicidal psych nurse’s return to her hometown in the redwoods. Mick’s writing also appears in Trailer Park Boys: Big A$$ Comic Collection (Devil’s Due Comics) and The Hard Times: The First 40 Years (Mariner Books).

Joshua Millican is a graduate of UC Santa Cruz where he earned degrees in literature and creative writing. He is a journalist (Dread Central), an actor, and an active member of the HWA. Millican’s best- known works of fiction include Teleportasm (Killer VHS Series #3) and Chopping Mall: The Novelization. His new novel, Dopefoot, is a gory cryptid mystery that released June 16th, 2026 via Mad Axe Media.

Bad Bitch Book Club started in 2018 as a friend-of-a-friend online book club, but became so much more during the pandemic. Our mission is to introduce people to lesser-known or debut authors. Our members are incredibly passionate about reading diversely and sharing their love of books. We host 10-12 members-only retreats all over the US every year and have regional chapters in almost every U.S state. Our regional leaders host in-person monthly events that have resulted in countless connections. Each month, we host multiple virtual book club meetings and frequently invite authors for Q&As — we’ve had dozens of best selling authors join us over the years. She’s currently writing a feature for Universal called BETAS and developing Ella Enchanted as a series for Disney+, with Miramax and Somewhere Pictures (Anne Hathaway). Ilana previously wrote for TV series such as THE RUNAROUNDS (Amazon) and HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: THE MUSICAL: THE SERIES (Disney+). She lives in Los Angeles with her fiancé and their rescue dog, Ella.
