Join us for a reading in The Wanda Coleman Theater with three Puerto-Rican poets visiting Los Angeles

In celebration of Latinx Heritage Month, join us for a night of bilingual poetry in English and Spanish with Puerto Rican poets Guillermo Rebollo Gil, author of To learn to describe the animal, Paola Capó-García, author of CLAP FOR ME THAT’S NOT ME, and Margarita Pintado, author of Ojo en el Cielo/Eye in Heat. The poets will be reading new and selected work in The Wanda Coleman Theater.

About the authors

Guillermo Rebollo Gil is a writer, sociologist, translator, and attorney. He is the author of To learn to describe the animal (Gasher, 2025). His publications include poetry in AGNI, BOMB, Fence, Poetry Northwest, The Hopkins Review and elsewhere; literary criticism in Cleveland Review of Books, On the Seawall, The Smart Set, Tiny Molecules, and Annulet. In 2020, the Spanish publisher Ediciones Liliputienses published an anthology of his poetry under the title Informe de Logros: poemas 2000-2019. Es el papá de Lucas Imar y Elián Iré.

Paola Capó-García is a poet and educator from San Juan, Puerto Rico. She is the author of CLAP FOR ME THAT’S NOT ME (2018), selected by D.A. Powell as the winner of Rescue Press’ 2017 Black Box Poetry Prize. Her poems have appeared in The Volta, The Texas Review, Puerto Rico en mi corazón, Latino Book Review, jubilat, Poetry Society of America, poets.org, and others. In 2020 she served as a mentor for Latinx in Publishing’s inaugural Writers Mentorship Program, and in 2021 she was awarded Teachers & Writers Magazine’s Bechtel Prize for an article detailing her experience teaching creative writing virtually during the pandemic. As a journalist her work has appeared in BOMB, Variety, Remezcla, and ELLE, among others.

Margarita Pintado is the author of five full-length poetry collections, including Una muchacha que se parece a mí/ A Girl Who Looks Like Me, winner of the 2015 Institute of Puerto Rican Culture Poetry Prize; Ojo en celo/ Eye in Heat, winner of the 2023 Ambroggio Prize (The Academy of American Poets and the University of Arizona Press); and La isla se achica/ The Island Shrinks (forthcoming), winner of the 2025 Institute of Puerto Rican Culture Poetry Prize. She is a 2022 Letras Boricuas Fellow (Mellon Foundation.) Her essays on Cuban and Puerto Rican literature and culture have appeared in La Habana Elegante, Incubadora, Rialta Magazine, Revista Cruce, The Puerto Rican Review and El País, among others. Pintado Burgos earned her PhD in Spanish from Emory University and is a professor of literature and creative writing in San Diego, California. She directs the poetry website Distropika.

About Beyond Baroque

Beyond Baroque is one of the United States’ leading independent Literary | Arts Centers and public spaces dedicated to expanding the public’s knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. Founded in 1968 as an experimental literary magazine, Beyond Baroque is based out of the original City Hall building in Venice, California. The Center offers a diverse variety of literary and arts programming including readings and workshops. The building also houses a bookstore with a large collection of new poetry books for sale.

If you are attending in person, ticket purchase is required. Tickets will be available at the Beyond Baroque bookstore on the day of the event, but we recommend registering in advance through Eventbrite. Masks are encouraged while inside our center. Please arrive early.
