About the Book: In When Home Is a Photograph\, Leigh Raiford asks how Black people use photography to make home in the world. Raiford focuses on a selection of Black American activists and artists\, including Marcus Garvey\, James Van Der Zee\, Eslanda Goode Robeson\, and Kathleen Neal Cleaver to explore the complex relationship between racialized subjects and the medium of photography. As they traveled the world for study\, for work\, for pleasure\, or for survival\, these artists and activists took and collected photographs to express their political platforms and personal sense of self. Raiford considers the everyday image-making practices that these Black Americans employed to improve the condition of Black lives globally by imagining\, identifying\, inhabiting\, leaving\, defending\, and destroying “home.” When Home Is a Photograph shows how these figures did not merely utilize photography to emplace themselves in the world–they demonstrated how the use of photography is itself a way to mediate one’s relationship to the world. LEIGH RAIFORD is Professor of African American and African Diaspora studies at the University of California\, Berkeley. Her most recent book is Collaboration: A Potential History of Photography. SUMMARY:BOOK EVENT: The Edge of Space-Time: Chanda Prescod-Weinstein & Traci Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join Rep Club for a discussion on ‘The Edge of Space-Time’ by author Chanda Prescod-Weinstein in conversation with Traci ThomasWHO & WHAT: Join Rep Club for a discussion on The Edge of Space-Time: Particles\, Poetry\, and The Cosmic Dream Boogie with author Chanda Prescod-Weinstein & moderator Traci Thomas. WHEN: Doors at 6:30pm\, event promptly at 7pm. WHERE: Reparations Club\, 3054 S. Victoria Ave. Los Angeles\, CA 90016 HOW: TICKET w/ BOOK: This ticket guarantees a seat including a signed book available for pick up at the event. FREE RSVP (No Book Included): This Free RSVP DOES NOT include a copy of the book and entry is based strictly on capacity at the door. Books may be available for purchase in-store. SIGNED BOOK ONLY: Can’t make it IRL but still want a signed copy? Order directly from our site! Please email us at questions@reparations.club if you have any additional needs\, questions\, or accessibility concerns. About the Book: A FRESH\, CHARMING\, SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS TOUR OF THE MYSTERIES OF SPACE-TIME\, FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF THE DISORDERED COSMOSIn her highly acclaimed debut\, distinguished cosmologist and particle physicist Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein shed light on the entrenched injustices plaguing her field\, while at the same time sharing with her audience her abiding sense of wonder at the cosmos from a Black feminist perspective. Now\, in The Edge of Space-Time\, she leans into that wonder\, taking readers on a mind-altering journey to the boundaries of the universe\, inviting us to spend time at the edge of what we know about space-time and about ourselves.Guided by her conviction that science is for everybody\, Prescod-Weinstein renders accessible some of the most abstract concepts of theoretical physics and draws on poetry and popular culture—from Queen Latifah to Lewis Carroll to Big K.R.I.T. to Sun Ra and Star Trek— to tell fascinating stories about the fundamental quantum nature of space-time and everything inside of it. Here we meet the quantum cat that is both dead and alive\, learn the difference between dark matter and dark energy\, explore the inner workings of black holes\, investigate the possibility of a unified theory of quantum gravity\, and map out the meeting place of the unimaginably vast with the confoundingly small\, following our guide out to the far reaches of the particle horizon and down to the tiniest (and queerest) neutrino. Prescod-Weinstein shows us how spending time with the cosmos is a vital human activity that enriches all our lives. Along the way\, she calls on us to resist colonial approaches to space exploration and instead imagine a better path forward in our pursuit of humanity’s undeniable connection with the stars.Through Prescod-Weinstein’s clear-eyed and unique perspective\, and informed by her deep knowledge of post-colonial history and Black feminist thought\, The Edge of Space-Time argues that physics is an essential way for everyone to look at the universe and presents a compelling case that “the edge” is a powerful vantage point from which to see the big picture. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is an associate professor of physics and astronomy and core faculty in women’s and gender studies at the University of New Hampshire. She conducts award-winning theoretical physics research on dark matter\, the early universe\, and neutron stars\, while also researching Black feminist science studies. Her first book\, The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter\, Spacetime\, and Dreams Deferred\, won the 2021 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in science and technology\, the 2022 Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science\, and a 2022 Josephine Miles Award from PEN Oakland. A columnist for New Scientist and Physics World\, she is originally from East L.A.\, California\, and now divides her time between the New Hampshire Seacoast and Cambridge\, Massachusetts. Traci Thomas is the creator and host of The Stacks\, a podcast about books and the way they shape culture. The show asks the questions that provoke meaningful\, poignant\, and often hilarious conversations. Traci also hosts a live literary series with LAist called One for the Books\, is a monthly contributor for NPR’s Here & Now\, and she writes a monthly column on shereads.com. ABOUT THE BOOK:A MAGNIFICENT NEW NOVEL FROM THE BESTSELLING\, AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE—TAYARI JONES HAS WRITTEN AN UNFORGETTABLE NOVEL THAT SPARKLES WITH WIT AND INTELLIGENCE AND DEEP FEELING ABOUT TWO LIFELONG FRIENDS WHOSE WORLDS CONVERGE AFTER MANY YEARS APART IN THE FACE OF A DEVASTATING TRAGEDY. Vernice and Annie\, two motherless daughters raised in Honeysuckle\, Louisiana\, have been best friends and neighbors since earliest childhood\, but are fated to live starkly different lives. Raised by a fierce aunt determined to give her a stable home in the wake of her mother’s death\, Vernice leaves Honeysuckle at eighteen for Spelman College\, where she joins a sisterhood of powerfully connected Black women and marries into an affluent family. Annie\, abandoned by her dissolute mother as a child\, and fixated on the idea of finding her and filling the bottomless hole left by her absence\, sets off on a journey that will take her into a world of peril and adversity\, as well as love and adventure\, and culminate in a battle for her life.A novel about mothers and daughters\, about friendship and sisterhood\, and the complexities of being a woman in the American South\, Kin is an exuberant\, emotionally rich\, unforgettable work from one of the brightest and most irresistible voices in contemporary fiction. TAYARI JONES is the author of four novels\, most recently An American Marriage\, which was an Oprah’s Book Club Selection and also appeared on Barack Obama’s summer reading list and his year-end roundup. It won the Women’s Prize for Fiction (formerly known as the Orange Prize)\, Aspen Words Prize\, and an NAACP Image Award and has been published in two dozen countries. Jones lives in Atlanta. SUMMARY:BOOK EVENT: Mainline Mama w/ Keeonna Harris and Myriam Gurba

SIGNED BOOK ONLY: Can’t make it IRL but still want a signed copy? Order directly from our site! Please email us at questions@reparations.club if you have any additional needs\, questions\, or accessibility concerns. About the Book: A POWERFUL AND WRENCHINGLY INTIMATE MEMOIR ABOUT THE FORMIDABLE CHALLENGE OF RAISING A FAMILY SEPARATED BY PRISON WALLS AND HOW WE CAN FIGHT BACK AGAINST A BROKEN BYZANTINE SYSTEM. Keeonna and Jason met as young teens. Only fourteen\, Keeonna had never had a boyfriend before\, dreamed of attending Spelman to become an obstetrician\, and thought she was “grown.” Within a year she was pregnant\, and Jason was in prison\, convicted of a carjacking and sentenced to twenty-two years. Overnight Keeonna had become a “mainline mama\,” a parent facing the impossible task of raising a child–while still growing up herself–with an incarcerated partner. In this devastating and triumphant memoir\, Keeonna recalls her harrowing journey as a Mainline Mama\, from learning to overcome the exhausting difficulties of navigating the carceral system in the United States\, to transforming herself into an advocate for other women like her–the predominantly Black and brown women left behind to pick up the pieces of their families and fractured lives. Keeonna speaks frankly about the depression and suicidal thoughts that threatened to defeat her\, how she learned to rebuild her broken relationship with a mother that lost trust in her\, and how time eased the shame\, guilt\, and stigma of being a young Black teen mom with a partner behind bars. She offers inspiration and solace\, showing how to create moments of beauty\, humanity\, and love in a place designed to break spirits\, such as picking the perfect wedding dress for a ceremony in a state prison visiting room. Mainline Mama is about creating self-love and community–crucial acts of radical resistance against a prison industrial complex that is designed to dehumanize and to separate and shut away incarcerated individuals and their loved ones from the world. KEEONNA HARRIS is a writer\, storyteller\, mother of five\, prison abolitionist\, activist\, and academic\, born and raised in Watts and other parts of South Central Los Ange – les. Her work focuses on health disparities and radical organizing for women connected to systems of mass incarceration\, mothering\, and community building as acts of radical defiance against carceral institutions. Harris has received several honors\, including a 2018–2019 PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship\, a 2021 Tin House Summer Residency\, a 2023 Baldwin For The Arts Residency\, and a 2023 Hedgebrook Fellowship as the 2023 Edith Wharton Writer-in-Residence. She is a 2024 Hay – market Writing Freedom Fellow and a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Washington in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health. She is developing the Borderland Project\, a mental health and community support system for women forced to navigate carceral institutions to maintain connections with incarcerated persons. She lives in Seattle. MYRIAM GURBA is a writer and activist. She has authored five books\, including Poppy State: A Labyrinth of Plants and a Story of Beginnings. Her essays have been published by the New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, Harper’s Bazaar\, Vox\, and Paris Review. She is a co-founder of Dignidad Literaria\, a grassroots organization committed to combating racism in the book world. She believes that we can achieve a world free of rape culture and works hard to make that a reality. In her spare time\, she enjoys solving crossword puzzles\, baking\, and annoying her cats.
