Kendi\nOff Site Event\nAdmission to the Chain of Ideas Book Talk and Conversation at the Miracle Theater\nDoors open at 6:00 PM\n\n\n\n\nAbout Author \nDr. Ibram X. Kendi is one of the world’s foremost historians and leading antiracist scholars. His books have been translated into multiple languages and republished throughout the Americas\, Africa\, Europe\, and Asia. Dr. Kendi is Professor of History and the founding director of the Howard University Institute for Advanced Study\, an interdisciplinary research enterprise examining global racism. He is author of many highly acclaimed bestsellers including Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America\, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction. He is the author of the international bestseller How to Be an Antiracist. Time magazine named Dr. Kendi one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship\, popularly known as the Genius Grant. \n\n\n\n CHAIN OF IDEAS\, the latest from National Book Award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi. \nRecall the words chanted in Charlottesville\, Virginia\, but heard around the world: “You will not replace us!” Recall the string of mass shooters around the world—in Oslo and Christchurch\, Buffalo\, El Paso\, and Pittsburgh—who claimed their crimes were a defense against “White genocide.” Recall business and media figures cultivating anxiety and furor over demographic change. These incidents only scratch the surface of this ascendant idea: Popular and ruling politicians in every region of the world have been expressing some version of great replacement theory\, eroding democratic norms in the name of preventing demographic change and restoring national greatness. What is great replacement theory? Variations on the theory have existed for centuries\, but it was given this name by a French novelist in 2011 who believed Black and Brown immigrants were “invading” Europe\, brought by shadowy elites to “replace” Europe’s White population. From there\, politicians and theorists—whether in the United States or the United Kingdom\, Germany or Chile\, Hungary or Australia—repackaged the conspiracy as a story of “globalists” welcoming “migrant criminals” and diversity initiatives to take away the jobs\, cultures\, electoral power\, and the very lives of White people. Over time\, great replacement theory has expanded the threat to include citizens\, men\, Jews\, Christians\, heterosexuals\, and ethnic majorities in countries as distinct as Russia\, El Salvador\, Brazil\, Italy\, and India. All are targeted with the message that they are under an existential attack that only a strongman can prevent. \nIn our fast-shifting political landscape\, most people are unfamiliar with this theory’s origins and its spread\, which isn’t a coincidence. In Chain of Ideas\, international bestselling author Ibram X. Kendi uses exacting and clear prose to uncover the roots of great replacement theory and its various mutations around the world. It is an unsettling but indispensable global history of how great replacement theory brought humanity into this authoritarian age—and how we can free ourselves from it

ABOUT THE BOOK:A MAGNIFICENT NEW NOVEL FROM THE BESTSELLING\, AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE—TAYARI JONES HAS WRITTEN AN UNFORGETTABLE NOVEL THAT SPARKLES WITH WIT AND INTELLIGENCE AND DEEP FEELING ABOUT TWO LIFELONG FRIENDS WHOSE WORLDS CONVERGE AFTER MANY YEARS APART IN THE FACE OF A DEVASTATING TRAGEDY. Vernice and Annie\, two motherless daughters raised in Honeysuckle\, Louisiana\, have been best friends and neighbors since earliest childhood\, but are fated to live starkly different lives. Raised by a fierce aunt determined to give her a stable home in the wake of her mother’s death\, Vernice leaves Honeysuckle at eighteen for Spelman College\, where she joins a sisterhood of powerfully connected Black women and marries into an affluent family. Annie\, abandoned by her dissolute mother as a child\, and fixated on the idea of finding her and filling the bottomless hole left by her absence\, sets off on a journey that will take her into a world of peril and adversity\, as well as love and adventure\, and culminate in a battle for her life.A novel about mothers and daughters\, about friendship and sisterhood\, and the complexities of being a woman in the American South\, Kin is an exuberant\, emotionally rich\, unforgettable work from one of the brightest and most irresistible voices in contemporary fiction. A graduate of Harvard Business School and Yale University\, he is a winner of the National Academies of Sciences\, National Journalism\, and George Polk awards. He writes for The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine\, and was the founding host of the Slate podcast How To! with Charles Duhigg. \n“This is not just a riveting read about how to understand others better. It’s also a revealing look at how to be understood. Charles Duhigg delivers a winning combination of stories\, studies\, and guidance that might well transform the worst communicators you know into some of the best.”—Adam Grant\, New York Times bestselling author of Think Again and Hidden Potential\, and host of the podcast Re:Thinking \n“Our personal and professional success depend upon our ability to understand and be understood\, and yet we typically leave this up to intuition. In Supercommunicators\, Charles Duhigg goes through a mountain of research—and some riveting stories—and unearths practical tactics to show that anyone can become a more effective listener\, speaker\, and even social media poster.”—David Epstein\, bestselling author of Range and The Sports Gene \nIn Supercommunicators\, Charles Duhigg blends deep research and his trademark storytelling skills to show how we can all learn to identify and leverage the hidden layers that lurk beneath every conversation. \nCommunication is a superpower and the best communicators understand that whenever we speak\, we’re actually participating in one of three conversations: practical (What’s this really about?)\, emotional (How do we feel?)\, and social (Who are we?). If you don’t know what kind of conversation you’re having\, you’re unlikely to connect. \nSupercommunicators know the importance of recognizing—and then matching—each kind of conversation\, and how to hear the complex emotions\, subtle negotiations\, and deeply held beliefs that color so much of what we say and how we listen. Our experiences\, our values\, our emotional lives—and how we see ourselves\, and others—shape every discussion\, from who will pick up the kids to how we want to be treated at work. In this book\, you will learn why some people are able to make themselves heard\, and to hear others\, so clearly. \nWith his storytelling that takes us from the writers’ room of The Big Bang Theory to the couches of leading marriage counselors\, Duhigg shows readers how to recognize these three conversations—and teaches us the tips and skills we need to navigate them more successfully. \nIn the end\, he delivers a simple but powerful lesson: With the right tools\, we can connect with anyone.

SUMMARY:BOOK EVENT: The Edge of Space-Time: Chanda Prescod-Weinstein & Traci Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join Rep Club for a discussion on ‘The Edge of Space-Time’ by author Chanda Prescod-Weinstein in conversation with Traci ThomasWHO & WHAT: Join Rep Club for a discussion on The Edge of Space-Time: Particles\, Poetry\, and The Cosmic Dream Boogie with author Chanda Prescod-Weinstein & moderator Traci Thomas. WHEN: Doors at 6:30pm\, event promptly at 7pm. WHERE: Reparations Club\, 3054 S. SIGNED BOOK ONLY: Can’t make it IRL but still want a signed copy? Order directly from our site! Please email us at questions@reparations.club if you have any additional needs\, questions\, or accessibility concerns. About the Book: A FRESH\, CHARMING\, SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS TOUR OF THE MYSTERIES OF SPACE-TIME\, FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF THE DISORDERED COSMOSIn her highly acclaimed debut\, distinguished cosmologist and particle physicist Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein shed light on the entrenched injustices plaguing her field\, while at the same time sharing with her audience her abiding sense of wonder at the cosmos from a Black feminist perspective. Now\, in The Edge of Space-Time\, she leans into that wonder\, taking readers on a mind-altering journey to the boundaries of the universe\, inviting us to spend time at the edge of what we know about space-time and about ourselves.Guided by her conviction that science is for everybody\, Prescod-Weinstein renders accessible some of the most abstract concepts of theoretical physics and draws on poetry and popular culture—from Queen Latifah to Lewis Carroll to Big K.R.I.T. to Sun Ra and Star Trek— to tell fascinating stories about the fundamental quantum nature of space-time and everything inside of it. Here we meet the quantum cat that is both dead and alive\, learn the difference between dark matter and dark energy\, explore the inner workings of black holes\, investigate the possibility of a unified theory of quantum gravity\, and map out the meeting place of the unimaginably vast with the confoundingly small\, following our guide out to the far reaches of the particle horizon and down to the tiniest (and queerest) neutrino. Prescod-Weinstein shows us how spending time with the cosmos is a vital human activity that enriches all our lives. Along the way\, she calls on us to resist colonial approaches to space exploration and instead imagine a better path forward in our pursuit of humanity’s undeniable connection with the stars.Through Prescod-Weinstein’s clear-eyed and unique perspective\, and informed by her deep knowledge of post-colonial history and Black feminist thought\, The Edge of Space-Time argues that physics is an essential way for everyone to look at the universe and presents a compelling case that “the edge” is a powerful vantage point from which to see the big picture. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is an associate professor of physics and astronomy and core faculty in women’s and gender studies at the University of New Hampshire. She conducts award-winning theoretical physics research on dark matter\, the early universe\, and neutron stars\, while also researching Black feminist science studies. Her first book\, The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter\, Spacetime\, and Dreams Deferred\, won the 2021 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in science and technology\, the 2022 Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science\, and a 2022 Josephine Miles Award from PEN Oakland. A columnist for New Scientist and Physics World\, she is originally from East L.A.\, California\, and now divides her time between the New Hampshire Seacoast and Cambridge\, Massachusetts. Traci Thomas is the creator and host of The Stacks\, a podcast about books and the way they shape culture. The show asks the questions that provoke meaningful\, poignant\, and often hilarious conversations. Traci also hosts a live literary series with LAist called One for the Books\, is a monthly contributor for NPR’s Here & Now\, and she writes a monthly column on shereads.com. Please email us at questions@reparations.club if you have any additional needs\, questions\, or accessibility concerns. About the Book: In When Home Is a Photograph\, Leigh Raiford asks how Black people use photography to make home in the world. Raiford focuses on a selection of Black American activists and artists\, including Marcus Garvey\, James Van Der Zee\, Eslanda Goode Robeson\, and Kathleen Neal Cleaver to explore the complex relationship between racialized subjects and the medium of photography. As they traveled the world for study\, for work\, for pleasure\, or for survival\, these artists and activists took and collected photographs to express their political platforms and personal sense of self. Raiford considers the everyday image-making practices that these Black Americans employed to improve the condition of Black lives globally by imagining\, identifying\, inhabiting\, leaving\, defending\, and destroying “home.” When Home Is a Photograph shows how these figures did not merely utilize photography to emplace themselves in the world–they demonstrated how the use of photography is itself a way to mediate one’s relationship to the world. LEIGH RAIFORD is Professor of African American and African Diaspora studies at the University of California\, Berkeley. Her most recent book is Collaboration: A Potential History of Photography. Aziz’s educational and conflict resolution work throughout the world has earned him the titles of National Geographic Explorer and TED Fellow. He has spoken at international organizations and conferences including The United Nations\, Nexus\, and the European Parliament. He has founded several peace-focused initiatives within Israel and the Middle East\, including the Jesus Trail\, Fauzi Azar Inn\, and Abraham Hostel & Tour brands. \n“We live next to one another\, yet we are segregated by roadblocks and checkpoints. We share the same dream of a better future for our children\, but we are so divided by fear and anger that we cannot recognize one another’s humanity. The wounds of our history run deep\, but if we are to build a shared future\, we must bring down the walls of ignorance and hatred that divide us.” \nWatch their TED Talk. \nPalestinian Aziz Abu Sarah and Israeli Maoz Inon are unlikely peacemakers\, dedicated to finding a solution to the bitter war that has decimated historical\, ancient land and ended family lines. Despite the losses they have suffered\, the resolve of their friendship has taught them that strength and unity are more powerful than the violence of separation. Throughout their travels\, they have been constantly asked: In the face of so much pain and suffering on both sides\, when there have been so many lives lost and families shattered\, how can they ever find hope? Their answer is always the same. One cannot find hope. We must create it. \nIn The Future Is Peace\, Sarah and Inon take readers on their unforgettable weeklong journey across the holy land while exploring each other’s personal and national histories in a land of competing narratives\, amid the turbulent push and pull of near constant war\, and the recent devastation that has rocked the world. Their mission—to explain the naivete in believing that more violence can bring security and prosperity to either people while in search of a true and lasting peace. Pairing unapologetic candor and inspirational prose\, Sarah and Inon are sending a message to humanity that the people have the power to make change. Peace is achievable\, not just between the river and the sea\, but throughout the world.

They will discuss joy that doesn’t require us to pretend everything is fine. Expect laughter\, honesty\, and the rare relief of being told the truth: you can’t always be happy—but you can be joyful\, anyway. \n.Kate Bowler is the three-time New York Times bestselling author of Everything Happens for a Reason\, No Cure for Being Human\, Good Enough\, The Lives We Actually Have\, Blessed\, and The Preacher’s Wife and hosts the popular podcast Everything Happens. A Duke University professor\, she earned a master’s of religion from Yale Divinity School and a PhD at Duke University. \nRainn Wilson is an Emmy Award nominated actor\, best known for the role of Dwight Schrute in NBC’s The Office. He is the host of the Peacock docu-series Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss in which he travels the world in search of happiness. He is author of the New York Times bestselling Soulpankake: Chew on Life’s Big Questions as well as his comedic memoir\, The Bassoon King: My Life in Art\, Faith and Idiocy. His most recent book is Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution. His diverse career includes television\, movies\, Broadway\, unscripted series\, animation\, and podcasts. \n“Joyful\, Anyway is colorful and layered\, unafraid of the occasional gut-punch of raw feeling and vulnerability—much like Kate Bowler herself. She suffers no fools\, especially the toxic optimists.”—Jerry Seinfeld \nYou can’t always be happy\, but you can be joyful\, anyway. \nWe live in a culture convinced that chasing happiness will optimize our bodies\, our minds\, our relationships\, our lives. But in the meantime\, bad news usually stays bad: illness\, chronic pain\, grief\, and disappointment don’t obey our timelines or vision boards. We are left wondering why\, if we’re doing everything right\, life still feels so hard. \nHonest and bracingly tender\, Joyful\, Anyway proves that experiencing joy does not depend on resolving everything that makes life difficult. Drawing on a decade of living with serious illness and a lifetime studying America’s obsession with progress\, Kate Bowler shows why people so busy chasing happiness miss out on actual joy. \nJoy isn’t something you can optimize or manufacture—it finds us at the edge of expectation\, when life interrupts our scripts. Joyful\, Anyway gives language for the ache we all carry and practices for “putting yourself in the way of joy”: loosening control\, introducing novelty\, choosing charity\, and staying open to the surprising\, technicolor moments that pull us back into life. \nJoy reminds us that no matter what\, life is still worth loving. For every time we ask is this it?\, joy will answer: There is more.

She documents her experiences rehabilitating dogs on social media through her writing and storytelling. She lives in Brooklyn with her fiancé\, Jacob\, her dog\, Simon\, and a rotating cast of foster dogs. \nKristin Davis is an actress and producer\, best known for playing Charlotte York in the award-winning series Sex and the City\, its two successful feature films\, and in the continuation series\, And Just Like That… Her three decades spanning career combined with her dedication to meaningful causes has solidified Davis as a respected and influential presence both on and off screen. \nIsabel Klee had always wanted to live in New York City. At age 20\, she got her chance\, ditching her college upstate and moving into a grungy basement apartment in Manhattan. Dog-obsessed since childhood\, her first post-grad job was becoming an assistant to a dog photographer\, and something clicked into place: a career focused on helping dogs was the new dream. Isabel quickly found a passion for rehabilitating rescue dogs and helping them get adopted. At the same time\, she was caught up in a whirlwind of friendships\, parties\, fickle boyfriends and grand romances\, which she recounts in honest\, tender\, and sometimes devastating chapters about the search for love and belonging. Isabel’s first true love\, though\, was Simon\, a fluffy puppy who’d been saved from the meat trade. As the highs and lows of her twenties hit Isabel in wave after wave\, it was Simon who kept her grounded. Together\, Isabel and Simon created a community of dog-lovers and a tight-knit group of friends pursuing their dreams. In this honest and moving memoir\, Isabel weaves together the stories of her foster dogs—and the challenges she helped them overcome—with tales of complicated relationships\, hard decisions\, and great loves in New York City\, all leading to a happy ending not only for the rescue pups\, but for Isabel herself.

She is the co-host\, with her friend\, actress Christina Applegate\, the podcast MeSsy\, about their friendship and multiple sclerosis. She lives in Austin. \nLaura Dave is the New York Times bestselling author of several novels\, including The Last Thing He Told Me and its sequel\, The First Time I Saw Him. Her novels have sold more than six million copies and have been translated into over twenty languages. The Last Thing He Told Me is now a series on Apple TV+\, and two of her other novels are set to be feature films at Netflix. \n“Jamie Lynn’s beautiful\, uplifting memoir is a testament to resilience and grace. She shows us how to heal\, forgive\, and begin again.” – Robin Roberts \nJamie Lynn Sigler is both the girl-next-door and a superstar. At the the young age of sixteen she was tapped to star as Meadow Soprano\, daughter of mob boss Tony Soprano. In this moving and fiercely honest memoir\, she reflects on her life and her years on The Sopranos. But this is no tale of woe; Jamie guides us through her darkest moments and comes out the other side emboldened and not embittered. A natural storyteller\, she shares memories of her time portraying Meadow Soprano and beyond\, including her often painful journey of self-discovery. In this unflinching account\, Jamie holds nothing back; her resilience\, candor\, and her heart-bursting capacity for love shine through on every page. \nAnd So It Is… offers the best of memoir from a cherished voice that invites us to share the most challenging and equally blessed moments of life’s journey. A triumphant story from one of America’s favorite stars.
